Sports Scholarships 2010
Sports scholarships awarded to 14 students at LYIT on 15 February 2010.
Fourteen scholarships for sporting achievers were presented by Paul Hannigan, President, on Monday, 15 February 2010.
Mr Hannigan thanked all those students present for their efforts on the sporting fields for yet another successful year. He acknowledged that the soccer club were “up there” competing with the bigger colleges. He wished the GAA club “all the best” in there forthcoming Trench Cup semi-final, and he also paid tribute to the individual competitors such as Paul Dooley, an intermediate level boxer on the rise, and Avril McNamee who is progressing well in the National Handball competitions. The President admitted to looking forward to the sports scholarships event each year, as it underlined all that is good in the sporting area of the Institute. He wished Patsy McGonagle every success in his management of the Irish Athletics team for the coming season and also acknowledged the efforts of Students’ Union President, Breeda McGoldrick, over the past year in charge of the Union.

• Paul Doohan (Gortahork) for Soccer
• Paul Dooley (Ballybofey) for Boxing
• Kevin Durran (Convoy) for Rugby
• Sinead Flood (Castleblakney, Co Galway) for GAA
• Darragh Gallagher (Glenties) for GAA
• Ryisa Gillespie (Letterkenny) for Basketball
• Chantelle Grant (Letterkenny) for Ladies Soccer
• Gareth Harkin (Letterkenny) for Soccer
• Oisin McMenamin (Newtowncunningham) for Soccer
• Avril McNamee (Ballybofey) for Handball
• Danny Murphy (Moville) for GAA
• Ian Ward (Castlefin) for Athletics
• Aidan Wilkinson (Letterkenny) for Basketball.
Among those in attendance were Declan O’Carroll, former Donegal GAA star; Terry Leyden, Disciplinary Secretary, Donegal Football League; Dessie Kelly, Secretary, Ulster FA; Michael Murphy, Donegal GAA Development Officer; Shane O’Neill, Ulster Development Rugby Coach; Myles Gallagher, Highland Radio Sports Presenter; Kenny Harkin, Highland Radio; and Paul Callaghan, County Donegal Hurling Development Officer.
Paddy Gallagher, Student Officer, in concluding the presentation thanked those students in attendance, the parents of the winning scholarship holders, some of whom travelled long distances to be present for the ceremony hosted in the CoLab at Letterkenny IT.
